Start with the stations that solve your next problem
Mayday's early crafting progression moves from basic survival supplies to metal equipment and a larger backpack. The important breakthrough is reaching the next island, where the stone-head encounter opens the Furnace and Forge part of the demo. Build the Furnace first so you can produce the materials needed for the Forge.
This guide follows the documented demo progression, with later official updates taking priority over older player experience. It covers a useful route through the early stations rather than a complete recipe tree for the full game.
Establish basic crafting and cooking
Follow the opening diary objectives to make your workbench, basic tools, trap, and raft. In the narrated demo, the diary is opened with Q; use your own displayed binding if you have changed the controls. These early objectives give you both a way to gather supplies and a way to reach the next stage of the story.
Build a campfire early enough to prepare food for exploration. The developer's cooking instructions are to press E near the campfire, then right-click an eligible pot or container while the cooking menu is open. Suitable inventory items are highlighted, helping you distinguish ingredients from objects the menu cannot use.
An eaten coconut leaves a shell that can be used for cooking, according to the developer. You therefore do not have to treat an iron cooking pot as the starting requirement for every soup. Iron and gold pots are additional containers available through progression.
Reach iron before building the Forge
In player experience documented by the demo transcripts, the next island's stone heads introduce the need for stronger equipment and unlock the metalworking stations. The sequence matters:
- Continue the stone-head dialogue and check the newly available building recipes.
- Collect iron ore from the nearby iron-bearing rocks with a pickaxe.
- Build the Furnace and use its recipes to process materials.
- Produce iron ingots and the other materials shown in your Forge recipe.
- Build the Forge, then use the unlocked metal equipment recipes to prepare for the story fight.
The older long demo explicitly uses coal for iron ingots and makes that coal from wood. Check the Furnace recipe in your build before committing all your wood to another project.
The official Mayday update history records an October 23 change reducing the Forge's iron requirement from five ingots to three. Older narrated recipes still say five. Use three as the updated iron requirement, while checking the remaining ingredients in the live recipe rather than treating an old recipe as a complete current shopping list.
Add inventory and farming support as they unlock
The Sewing Table is the station to look for when you want a bigger backpack. The October 23 update moved its unlock before the Drying Frame specifically to give players earlier access to backpack crafting. Waiting for every leather-processing structure before checking the table can therefore send you through an outdated progression order.
Later bag crafting in player experience involves wool, thread, and leather. The Drying Frame supports the hide-to-leather part of that chain, while sheep provide wool for thread. Inspect the particular bag you want: the ingredients for constructing its station and the ingredients for crafting the bag are separate requirements.
Farming adds another group of support structures as the demo advances. The documented player session unlocks a well, mill, henhouse, and sheep pen alongside farming progression. These serve different needs, so prioritize the one that supplies your next missing resource instead of building everything merely because its recipe appeared.
Use the updated building and storage tools
The October 19 update changed how base work is organized. Building uses the hammer's right-click menu, and the hammer can pick up placed structures so they can be moved. Older reports that structures cannot be moved describe an earlier state of the game.
The same update added crafting with materials stored in chests. It also describes upgrading chests in place once you have the upgraded workbench. Those features can reduce repeated inventory transfers, though they do not remove the need to unlock the relevant station or recipe.
For a manageable early base, keep the chain clear: gathering tools supply basic crafting; food supports travel; the Furnace supplies processed materials; the Forge supplies metal equipment; the Sewing Table expands carrying capacity. That order addresses the main early bottlenecks without assuming every optional structure is mandatory.
FAQ
Do I need the Forge to make my first iron ingots?
No. The documented demo produces ingots at the Furnace before building the Forge. Building the Forge first would reverse that material chain.
Does the Forge require five iron ingots?
Older player experience says five, but the official October 23 update reduced that requirement to three. Check the current recipe for its other materials.
Which station makes backpacks?
The Sewing Table. Its unlock was moved ahead of the Drying Frame to make the first backpack available earlier.
Can I move a station after placing it?
The October 19 update added picking up placed structures with the hammer. Advice saying structures cannot be moved predates that change.
