Build a hammock where you want to respawn

Repeatedly waking up at the plane makes a distant base less convenient than it needs to be. To establish a local respawn point, build the Hammock at the location you want to use. Older Mayday: The Survival Island guides call this structure a tent, but the developer later explains that the hammock replaces it and serves the same gameplay purpose.

The documented method centers on building the respawn structure at the chosen location. It does not establish a separate claim flag, a required first sleep, or a special save-menu command, so there is no reason to add those steps to the routine.

Follow the documented placement method

Use this order when setting up your base:

  1. Choose the location where you want to return after death.
  2. Look for the Hammock in your build's crafting options.
  3. Gather the materials shown by that version and build it at the intended location.

The developer specifically mentions palm wood as part of the hammock's recipe, while also saying its recipe differs slightly from the removed tent's. Follow the displayed recipe instead of gathering an old tent material list.

The original explanation appears in the developer's respawn and item-recovery discussion. In March 2025, Daniel Abdelnur says death returns the survivor to the plane unless a tent has been built, in which case the survivor respawns at that structure's location. The later replacement explanation is what connects that historical method to the hammock.

Why older guides name a tent or cabin

The game's shelter terminology changed during development. In the developer's later hammock explanation, the tent was removed for visual reasons and the hammock took over its gameplay purpose.

An official May 28 update separately describes an old cabin being replaced by a hammock. Those are two pieces of development history, not proof that the words “cabin” and “tent” always referred to the same item. The practical consequence is straightforward: use the hammock shown in your build, and treat the older names as historical advice.

This also explains why an early demo video can show a Base Tent while a later version expects a hammock. A different model and crafting recipe do not mean you need to reproduce the video's entire old camp layout.

Keep healing and death recovery separate

A respawn location determines where you return after dying. It is not your only way to recover health while alive: the developer explicitly says food can restore health without a tent or hammock. Carrying useful meals still matters even after your base has a respawn structure.

Changing your respawn location also does not move the raft to the plane or return lost inventory directly to your pockets. In the documented normal death-recovery loop, the raft stays at the beach, and you can use the map to locate it before taking a free return trip to recover dropped items.

Place the hammock somewhere that makes that recovery route practical. Keeping your home supplies organized and knowing how to reach the shore are useful preparations; neither requires assuming that the hammock automatically retrieves equipment for you.

FAQ

What structure should I use to set a respawn point?

Use the Hammock in the later documented version. The developer says it replaces the tent and serves the same gameplay purpose.

Do I have to sleep in it once to activate it?

The developer's supplied explanation describes building the structure at the desired location. It does not specify a mandatory first sleep, so that extra requirement is not established here.

Why am I finding guides that tell me to build a tent?

They describe an older demo. The tent's respawn role was subsequently transferred to the hammock, with a somewhat different crafting recipe.

Does a hammock prevent me from losing items on death?

The documented benefit concerns your respawn location. Normal death recovery still involves returning to the island and collecting dropped items; the developer describes that return voyage as free.
