Put travel supplies into the raft's food slot

New islands in the documented Mayday demo require food supplies placed in the raft's travel slot. Open travel, choose a destination, and supply enough food value to meet the requirement shown for that journey. Having food in your inventory or eating it yourself does not replace putting provisions into the raft.

The key to Mayday: The Survival Island how to unlock new islands with food points is the difference between a destination's supply requirement and your character's immediate need to eat. Plan for both before departing.

Recorded demo player experience establishes the following sequence:

  1. Build and place the raft.
  2. Use its travel interaction; the recorded demo uses E.
  3. Check the destination and its displayed food requirement.
  4. Add suitable food to the raft slot until the requirement is met.
  5. Use the travel interface's Explore option to reach the new destination.

Read the requirement in your own travel menu rather than assuming every island uses the same number.

Improve food value with multi-ingredient soup

If basic food is not providing enough travel value, cooking is a useful next step. The demo introduces bowls for combining ingredients into soup, and developer replies explain the container system more directly.

In a March 20, 2025 Steam reply, developer Daniel Abdelnur tells players to open the campfire's cooking menu with E. Usable inventory items are highlighted in green. The reply explains that using a pot opens four ingredient slots, allowing meat and vegetables to be combined into a higher-value soup.

There is also a concrete historical example. In a February 22, 2025 reply, the developer recommends a soup combining pork leg, crab legs, carrot, and beetroot, describing a value of 150 food, or 300 from two such soups. This illustrates why combining ingredients can clear a travel obstacle more effectively than relying on a single basic food.

Those values belong to that developer's demo-era answer. They are not a complete current recipe table or proof of the best possible recipe. Compare your actual meal value with the requirement displayed by your build.

Separate first visits from free return journeys

Community player experience in the later demo explicitly describes travel between discovered islands as free. Once a destination is discovered, returning to your existing camp does not require treating it as a brand-new expedition.

Returning after deathA historical developer reply describes a free trip back using the surviving raft

This makes a permanent supply base useful. You can return to cooking and storage instead of assuming you must move or rebuild every station whenever a new island opens.

For death recovery specifically, the March 2025 developer guidance says to press M to locate the raft, reach it, and travel back to the island where you died without needing additional food. That describes the recovery journey, not a shortcut that removes a new island's initial requirement.

Check the menu before spending more supplies

When you are stuck, first confirm what the travel interface is asking for. Check that you selected a new destination, that food is in the raft's slot, and that its value meets the displayed requirement. If your supplies are inadequate, return to cooking rather than assuming you need a raft upgrade.

Do not use a number mentioned for one island as a universal cost. The sources support the process and the distinction between new and discovered destinations, but not a verified food-cost table for every island.

The developer's Mayday hunting and travel-food discussion provides the historical soup example and its progression context.

FAQ

Does food in my backpack unlock a destination automatically?

The travel tutorial tells you to add provisions to the raft's food slot. Merely carrying or eating them is a different action.

Why is one cooked item not enough?

A new destination requires a particular food value. Multi-ingredient soup can provide a higher value, but you still need to compare it with the requirement shown.

Do I pay again when returning to my base?

Recorded demo player experience shows free travel between discovered islands.

Is the 150-food soup a guaranteed current best recipe?

No. It is a specific February 2025 developer example, not a current universal ranking. Use your build's displayed values.
