Unlock the Forge, then build the Furnace first
Building the Forge in Mayday's documented demo requires progressing through the next island's stone-head encounter and producing its materials at a Furnace. Mine iron ore with a pickaxe, make ingots, prepare the other displayed ingredients, and then build the unlocked Forge. The official October 23 update reduced the Forge's iron cost to three ingots.
That Furnace-first sequence resolves the apparent circular problem of needing iron before you have a Forge. Smelting the ingots and constructing the Forge are separate steps.
Reach the stone-head progression point
Complete the opening survival tasks and use your raft to continue to the next island. In the narrated demo route, the stone heads introduce a coming battle, direct the player toward nearby iron-bearing rocks, and open the Furnace and Forge stage of crafting.
Finish this dialogue before treating a missing Forge recipe as a material shortage. A recipe you have not unlocked cannot be solved simply by collecting more wood or stone.
Player experience in two correct-game demo transcripts explicitly identifies the station as the Forge. Some other narration uses the word “anvil,” but that wording alone is not a reliable reason to merge the two names or substitute one recipe for the other. Select the station labeled Forge in your build.
Prepare the processed materials
Follow the chain in this order:
- Gather iron ore with a pickaxe. The demo narration describes mining it after reaching the iron progression point.
- Construct the Furnace. Use its own building recipe, rather than looking for a completed Forge to make the first ingots.
- Make iron ingots and the other processed materials required by the Forge. The older long demo uses coal for ingots and makes coal from wood.
- Reopen the Forge recipe and check every ingredient. Reserve what it needs before crafting optional equipment.
- Build and place the Forge once the recipe is satisfied. You can then continue toward the metal equipment needed for the story encounter.
The older player recipes mention five iron ingots and three bricks. Those numbers belong to those recorded demo builds. The later official change replaces the five-ingot requirement with three, so the old list should not be presented as a complete current recipe. Check the brick and any other material requirements in your own menu.
Use the updated building controls and cost
The official Mayday update history documents both the Forge cost change and the October 19 building overhaul. With that overhaul, the hammer's right-click menu is the building entry point, and placed structures can be picked up with the hammer and moved.
This matters if an older walkthrough sends you to a different building shortcut or says your first station placement is permanent. Use the current hammer prompts when placing the Forge, and leave a convenient area around the Furnace and your other frequently used stations.
The October 19 update also added crafting from materials stored in chests. If you are using that updated system, organize your processed supplies in storage rather than following older advice that every ingredient must always be carried. The recipe still needs the required materials and the relevant progression unlock.
FAQ
How many iron ingots does the Forge need?
The official October 23 update reduced its iron requirement from five to three ingots. Check the current recipe for the remaining ingredients.
Do I need a Forge to make iron ingots?
No. The demonstrated route makes ingots at the Furnace before building the Forge.
Why is the Forge missing from my building recipes?
In the documented demo, its unlock comes with the stone-head progression on the next island. Continue that dialogue and check the newly available recipes.
Is the old five-ingot, three-brick recipe still accurate?
It describes an older player build. The official iron reduction supersedes the five-ingot part; use the recipe in your build for the other ingredients.
